Ghana Water Limited Shuts Down Bawku Water Supply System Due to Conflict Situation
The Management of the Ghana Water Limited has taken the decision to shut down the Bawku Water Supply system in response to the escalating conflict in the area. This move has been deemed necessary due to the changing dynamics of the conflict and the heightened security risks faced by the company’s staff in the district. The revision of curfew hours by the Minister of Interior further compounded the decision, leading to the withdrawal of services from the district with immediate effect.
The Managing Director, Ing Dr Clifford Braimah, highlighted the company’s commitment to resuming operations once the security situation improves, as stated in the press release dated January 29. This development comes amidst renewed conflict in the Bawku area, prompting Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, to call for parliamentary intervention to address the harmful actions that have resulted in the loss of lives, including the alleged murder of three young men by some soldiers.
Mr. Ayariga emphasized the need for accountability, even from the military, stressing the urgency of addressing the escalating conflict situation in Bawku. The company’s decision to shut down the water supply system underscores the significant impact of the conflict on essential services in the area, necessitating swift and effective measures to restore peace and stability.
As the conflict in Bawku continues to draw attention and prompt calls for intervention, the closure of the water supply system serves as a stark reminder of the far-reaching implications of the ongoing turmoil. The urgency of addressing the conflict and ensuring accountability for harmful actions has become increasingly evident, highlighting the need for concerted efforts to bring about lasting peace and security in the region.
