According to inside sources, there is a growing tension in the Ghana Police Service. This comes after the IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare promoted some Inspectors to chief Inspectors ahead of their seniors.
Background
It would be recalled that in July 2021, the immediate past IGP Mr. James Oppong Buanuh granted some police officers with higher degrees an academic Amnesty to be one rank ahead of their mates. This was done because their mates did not have those academic qualifications.
That academic promotion gave some of those beneficiaries (even Inspectors point 1 based on recommendations) at the time the opportunity to enter Police Academy previously known as Police College and subsequently graduated as Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs)
Some group of sergeants who fell within that category and were due for Inspector rank were promoted to Inspectors with four years incremental jumps. This means that they had already spent 4 years in the rank ahead of their mates. Per the natural turn of events, whilst their recruit mates were joining the inspectorate rank in January 2022, those with Academic Amnesty would be promoted to Chief Inspectors.
However, these inspectors numbering about 389 were denied their promotion at the end of the 6th month and their promotion date which should have read July 2018 per the promotion signal, were clandestinely manipulated by the IGP and his assigns to read july 2019.
What is surprising is that, these Inspectors after the academic promotions became the senior most Inspectors in the Ghana Police Service. Even though they spent almost 18 months in the rank, they have still been denied their promotion to chief Inspectors and rather put on point 5 when they were to be promoted in July 2022 that is, one clear year after the amnesty.
Current Happenings
The IGP in a recent communique promoting some police officers who were due for promotion to their next rank. However, he has promoted Inspectors with point 4 leaving their seniors with point 5 unprompted.
This unfair treatment from the current IGP is creating tension in the police service with the affected officers threatening to seek redress at the court.
The affected officers are calling on the IGP to do the needful by immediately promoting/restoring them to their chief Inspectorate rank and backdated to reflect what is due them.
It is believed that the Police Council led by H.E. Dr. Alhaji Mahmoud Bawumia, the Vice president of the Republic is not aware of this selective treatment by the IGP. Undoubtedly, the Police Council under the able leadership the Vice President will take immediate action to correct this injustice perpetrated by the IGP.
