Developments in Cecilia Abena Dapaah’s Case
A significant theft of local and foreign currency from the residence of former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah recently unfolded, leading to a series of events over the past 12 days.
Resignation and Legal Proceedings
In response to the reported theft, Cecilia Abena Dapaah promptly resigned from her position as Sanitation Minister on July 22. Subsequently, on July 24, she was arrested by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and later granted bail. On the same day, the OSP conducted a search of her residences in Accra, and the police sent the case docket to the Attorney General for advice.
Court Proceedings and Accused Individuals
As of August 2, the case is set to return to the Accra Circuit Court. During the proceedings, the two main accused individuals, Patience Botwe and Sarah Agyei, along with three accomplices, may be asked to enter their pleas in court. The court may also read the advice of the Attorney General regarding the case. Additionally, there is a possibility of amending the charge sheet to address any inconsistencies between reported figures and the charge sheet regarding the stolen cash sums.
Theft Details and Legal Actions
Two individuals, Patience Botwe (18 years) and Sarah Agyei (30 years), are facing charges before an Accra Circuit Court. They are alleged be involved in the theft of former Sanitation Minister’s items. The incidents, involving millions of Ghana Cedis, occurred at the couple’s residence in Abelemkpe, Accra, between July and October 2022. The accused face charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and stealing. Amounts of US$1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghana Cedis were stolen. Three more individuals, Benjamin, Kweku Botwe, and Malik Dauda, have also been charged in connection with the thefts. Sarah has been granted bail of GH¢1 million due to being a breastfeeding mother. The other suspects have been remanded into custody.
Case Development and Adjournment
The alleged thefts came to light when the complainants reported the incidents to the police in June of the current year. Patience was caught in the act, leading to the discovery of the stolen items and money in possession of her and her associates. The court has adjourned the case to August 2, 2023, to continue investigations.
