Anticipation Builds for Grand Finale of 2023 Renewable Energy Challenge
Six senior high schools from across Ghana are gearing up for the grand finale of the 2023 Renewable Energy Challenge. This competition, organized by the Energy Commission of Ghana and the GES, aims to inspire students’ interest in renewable energy and raise awareness.
From 127 to the Top Six
The competition started with 127 senior high schools across all 16 regions. The focus was on encouraging creative and innovative research into renewable energy, energy efficiency, and climate change. Now, three top schools from both the Northern and Southern Zones are set to vie for top honors in the finals.
Theme: Mechanized Small-Scale Agriculture
This year’s theme, “Mechanized Small-Scale Agriculture Using Renewable Energy Technologies,” aligns with Ghana’s commitment to integrating renewable energy into sustainable agricultural practices. It prompts students to explore innovative solutions at the intersection of renewable energy and small-scale farming.
Developing Core Competencies
Mr. Kofi Agyarko, Director of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency at the Energy Commission, underscores the importance of nurturing core competencies like creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork among students. The competition aligns with the government’s STEM agenda, fostering vital problem-solving skills.
Educational Impact on Economic Growth
Dr. William Amankra Appiah, Ashanti Regional Director of Education, highlights the role of STEM education in driving Ghana’s economic growth. The Renewable Energy Challenge inspires students to engage with renewable energy solutions, contributing to the nation’s sustainable development.
Northern and Southern Zone Finalists
Victorious in the Northern Zone are Serwaa Kese Girls, Dormaa, and Kwabre Senior High Schools. Meanwhile, the Southern Zone sees Sogakope, Yaa Asantewaa, and Mfantsiman Girls Senior High Schools emerge as finalists. These schools showcase dedication to blending technology and agriculture.
Students Ready for the Challenge
Awuye Joseph, a student from Sogakope SHS, demonstrated how renewable energy can revolutionize agriculture in Ghana. The grand finale in October in Accra promises a showcase of innovative projects and spirited competition among these exceptional schools.
As Ghana positions itself as a leader in renewable energy, the Renewable Energy Challenge exemplifies the nation’s commitment to a sustainable future driven by the creative and forward-thinking endeavors of its youth.
