Abraham Amaliba, the Director of Conflict Resolution of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) of bias, claiming that the GBA favors the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) while discriminating against the opposition NDC.
Amaliba’s allegations come in response to public perceptions that the GBA has been less vocal about certain events during the NPP administration compared to the previous NDC administrations. However, the President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Yaw Acheampong Boafo, emphasized that the legal system in Ghana operates independently and without bias.
Boafo asserted that the GBA is committed to upholding the principles of justice and fairness for all political parties and individuals, including the NDC. He argued that the NDC has not been treated worse by the Bar under the NPP administration compared to previous governments.
However, speaking at the closing ceremony of the 3rd Annual Lawyers Conference of the NDC, Amaliba criticized the GBA for allegedly neglecting the marginalized and downtrodden in Ghanaian society. He described the GBA as a “toothless bulldog” and accused it of discriminating in favor of NPP lawyers.
Amaliba called on lawyers, particularly those affiliated with the NDC, to become advocates for the voiceless and marginalized in society, citing instances such as the military invasion in Ashaiman as areas where lawyers should speak out and provide support.
He urged NDC lawyers to step up and use their legal expertise to support those in need and make statements in defense of individuals facing injustices in society.
