Russian President Vladimir Putin extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of a recent plane crash during his televised remarks. The crash reportedly claimed the lives of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the private military group Wagner, and nine others. Speaking about the tragedy, Putin recognized the significant contribution of Wagner employees in combating what he referred to as the “neo-Nazi regime” in Ukraine.
Addressing the nation, Putin stated, “As for the aviation tragedy, first of all, I want to express my most sincere condolences to the families of all the victims. It is always a tragedy.” The President acknowledged that preliminary data indicated the presence of Wagner company employees on the ill-fated flight.
Highlighting their role, Putin said, “If employees of the Wagner company were there, and the preliminary data indicate they were, I would like to note that these people made a significant contribution to our common cause of combating the neo-Nazi regime in Ukraine, we remember this, we know it and we shall not forget.”
Putin then turned his attention to Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner Group, acknowledging their long association. “He was a man with a difficult fate, and he made serious mistakes in life. And he strove for the results he needed for himself, and when I asked him about it, for the common cause, as in these last months.” Putin recognized Prigozhin’s talent and the business endeavors he had pursued both in Russia and abroad, particularly in Africa.
The Russian President revealed that Prigozhin had recently returned from Africa, where he had conducted business meetings with officials. However, Putin also emphasized that a preliminary investigation into the crash had been initiated by the Investigative Committee, ensuring a thorough and comprehensive examination of the incident.
Putin noted, “But what is quite definite – the head of the Investigative Committee reported to me this morning – is they have already begun a preliminary investigation into this event. And it will be carried out in full, and taken right to the end. There are no doubts about this.”
The President highlighted ongoing expert, technical, and genetic examinations to determine the exact cause of the crash. He urged patience while awaiting the conclusions of the investigators.
As Russia grapples with the aftermath of this tragic aviation incident, Putin’s remarks have shed light on the involvement of Wagner employees and their role in the broader context of Ukraine. The investigation will provide further insight into the circumstances surrounding the crash that claimed the lives of Yevgeny Prigozhin and others onboard.
