Legendary Sports Journalist Joe Lartey Passes Away at 96

Iconic Ghanaian sports journalist Joachim Awuley Lartey, fondly known as “Joe Lartey” or “Over to You Joe Lartey”, has passed away at the age of 96. Lartey was a revered figure in Ghanaian sports journalism. He was known for his captivating commentary phrase “over to you Joe Lartey”. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), where he served as the first president.

Born on June 6, 1927, in Accra, Lartey’s illustrious career in journalism began in 1961. He joined the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) as a football commentator. He later worked with Radio Nigeria from 1978 to 1990 before returning to GBC. On his return, he hosted programs such as Sports Digest on GTV.

Lartey’s impact on Ghanaian sports journalism is profound, with many acknowledging his influence on their careers. His legacy as a pioneering sports journalist will be remembered and honored by the sports community in Ghana and beyond.
